How do I care for my wooden bowl and other wood products?

To help keep your wood products beautiful for a lifetime of use they must be adequately cleaned and maintained. All wood products (except unfinished items) from the Holland Bowl Mill the with B’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver. This wood conditioner gives all wood items a deep penetrating natural finish and protects the wood from moisture and stains. The unique food safe formula in B’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver works better than mineral oil alone, and will never leave a buildup or become sticky to the touch like vegetable oils can. Use as directed.

Cleaning & Care Instructions:

  • Never soak wood products in water, or let water stand inside of a wooden bowl.
  • Don’t clean wood products in the dishwasher.
  • Never use wood products in a microwave or conventional oven.
  • Don’t leave wood products in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

To clean, we recommend using warm water, a small amount of mild soap and a non-abrasive cloth or sponge to clean your wood item, then hand dry.

You will occasionally need to retreat your wooden bowls and utensils with an application of B’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver to preserve the moisture content of the wood. Without a protective coating, the wood will dry out and may crack, warp or become stained. When the wood appears dry or about every other month (depending on frequency of use), apply a coat of B’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver as directed. Purchase Bee’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver here.

Do not use vegetable oil to protect your wooden bowls or other wood products! Vegetable oils will build up over time leaving the wood tacky and sometimes rancid. See the following question for help on how to remove vegetable oil buildup.

Can a wooden bowl that has an unpleasant build-up and/or a rancid smell be saved?

Yes, a wood bowl can be revived by using a non-abrasive scrub pad, lemon juice, and pumice dust to remove the oil buildup that has probably occurred over many years of use. This build-up is likely caused by the use of a vegetable-based oil or lard to preserve the bowl. Unfortunately using vegetable oil creates a breeding ground for bacteria, which then builds up and becomes gummy or tacky to the touch. In most cases, using the pumice and lemon juice will safely remove the old layers of vegetable oil and the smell. It will probably take more than one application of lemon juice and pumice to do the job. Once the old oil layers are removed, clean the bowl with warm water and mild soap and hand dry. When the bowl is spotless and dry, apply a coat of Bee’s Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver to properly preserve your bowl.

Can unfinished wooden bowls be decoratively painted or stained?

Yes, all Holland Bowl Mill unfinished bowls are fine sanded and ready for staining, painting, burning or carving. Many artists buy Holland Bowl Mill wooden bowls and make beautiful works of functional art.

Do wooden bowls darken with age?

Yes, over time wood bowls will darken to a deeper rich color if properly maintained. This change in the coloring of the wood is a primary reason why antique and primitive wooden bowls are so popular with collectors.
