Finding Out the Right Cutting Board Sizes

Share

Assorted cutting board sizes made from Holland Bowl Mill

Cutting boards come in many sizes (and at Holland Bowl Mill, they come in different shapes, too). To make sure that your cutting boards can handle all of your kitchen needs, you need to find out what cutting board sizes make sense for you, and how you can utilize different sizes (and shapes!) of wooden cutting boards.

A standard cutting board will measure about 12 inches by 18 inches, and have a rectangular shape. This size is ideal for many kitchens because it can be wide enough to cut multiple foods, but also not too large that you would have trouble storing it. Both smaller and larger cutting boards exist, and each have their own merits.

Small cutting boards, while easier to store, are slightly more difficult to cut on. However, their convenient size is just right if you want to mince herbs, or if you would like to slice up a small snack or fruits.

Larger cutting boards are bulkier, but they are helpful for cutting multiple foods at once. You would more likely see a larger cutting board in a commercial kitchen, but some homeowners really enjoy having the option of using the cutting board both for cutting up foods, but also to use as a centerpiece for serving.

Finding the right size cutting board for your kitchen means knowing what you will intend to use your cutting board for. In a kitchen with limited counter space, it will be difficult to lay out a large cutting board, so perhaps a smaller one or a standard size cutting board is the right fit. Do you like to host friends and family? A large cutting board can make it easier, and less messy, to carve the Thanksgiving turkey.

Thickness will matter in the size and shape of your cutting board, too. Plastic or silicone cutting boards are thinner, but sturdy, wooden cutting boards should have a thickness of 2 inches. That thickness will help the wood stave off damage and prevent warping.

Last, safety matters in the kitchen. A cutting board needs to work in tandem with the knife. If you were to lay down your knife diagonally across the cutting board, you want at least an inch of space on either side of the knife.

The perfect cutting board for your kitchen is the one that can handle all of your needs, and you can find it at Holland Bowl Mill.
