Description
Burl wood is rare by nature. It forms when a tree experiences stress — disease, injury, or some shift in growing conditions — and responds by producing a dense, irregular growth. The result is a concentration of grain unlike anything found in straight-cut lumber: swirling eyes, tight figure, and patterns that shift depending on how the light hits them.
This bowl came from one of those growths. Hand-turned at Holland Bowl Mill from reclaimed hardwood sourced right here in Holland, Michigan, No. 1 carries the kind of character that can’t be designed or repeated. The swirling grain and deep amber tones are entirely the wood’s own — formed over decades before it ever reached our shop.
At seven and a half inches in diameter and two inches in height, it’s a substantial piece for its size. Finished with Holland Bowl Mill’s Bee’s Oil — food-safe, long-lasting, and formulated to deepen the natural character of the wood over time.
There is no second piece like this one. Burl formations are fixed in the moment they form — this bowl was turned from a specific section of a specific reclaimed tree. Once it’s claimed, it cannot be remade.
