Walnut Burl Collection — No. 4

Burl wood doesn't follow a pattern. It forms in response to stress, a wound, a change in conditions, something the tree had to work around, and the grain records all of it. The result is a density of figure and movement that straight-cut lumber simply doesn't have. No. 4 came from one of those growths. Hand-turned at Holland Bowl Mill from reclaimed hardwood sourced right here in Holland, Michigan, this nine-inch bowl follows the natural edge of the burl itself. The irregular rim, the natural character along the edge — none of it was corrected. That's the point.
